Cal Tjader was responsible for developing a Latin jazz sound out of San Francisco during the mid 1950's.Tjader signed for the Concord label in 1979, a label for which he would record six albums before his career was untimely ended by his death in 1982. One of the best American jazz singers, Mcrae was also an accomplished pianist and songwriter. Early in her career she sang with bands led by Benny Carter, Mercy Ellington, Charlie Barnet and Count Bassie. While working in a small club in Brooklyn, Carmen was offered a contract with the Bethlehem label for whom she recorded eight tracks which attracted critical acclaim. Carmen went on to record extensively for the Decca label then for the Kapp and Columbia labels.In 1980, Carmen signed for the Concord label, resulting in four great albums, the best of which featured on this double CD set.
