When Curved Air first appeared on the scene in 1970, the progressive rock movement was in full flight. Sonja Kristina's vocals topped a mix of rock and classical music that reached its zenith with the 1971 hit single 'Back Street Luv'. But 'musical differences' caused two mainstays of the original band, violinist Darryl Way and mulit- instrumentalist Francis Monkman, to move on; original drummerFlorian Pilkington-Miksa, had also departed.Kristina and bassist Mike Wedgwood enlisted Jim Russell as drummer and two teenage prodigies, Eddie Jobson (violin) and Kirby (guitar), to provide the instrumental muscle. The line-up recorded 'Air Cut', released in April 1973. The material on this album was recorded not long after 'Air Cut' and, with the disintegration of the band in the summer of 1973, remained unheard until the 1990s.Jobson went on to join Roxy Music and later formed the jazz-rock band UK with Bill Bruford: during those years he also appeared on albums by artists as diverse as Jethro Tull and Frank Zappa. Curved Air continued until January 1977, becoming ever further removed from those highly distinctive beginnings. The collection catches them in transition.
